Proclamation

WHEREAS: Deacon Emeritus Tom P. Heggs has achieved the milestone of 100 years of age on April 19, 2024, and has now entered the category of Centenarian; and,

WHEREAS: Deacon Heggs joined the St. John Baptist Church under the leadership and pastorate of the late Reverend J. G. West in 1957; and,

WHEREAS: Deacon Heggs has served the St. John family faithfully for over 67 years in various servant leader roles to include: Deacon, Trustee, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Sunday Teacher, Director Christian board of Education, President of the Baptist Training Union, President Men’s Chorus, Cookout Grill master, Van Driver, and Sexton; and,

WHEREAS: Deacon Heggs was a true ambassador for Christ and foot soldier, if something needed to be done at the church Deacon Heggs could be counted on to get the job done; and,

WHEREAS: Deacon Heggs lead by example and was always impeccably groomed from the top of his head covered in a fedora hat to the sole of his spit shined shoes he represented the Lord well; and,

WHEREAS: Deacon Heggs was bestowed the honorary title of Deacon Emeritus on March 31, 2019, at the age of 94, he continues to visit the sick and shut-in and serve Communion, into his 99^th year; and,

WHEREAS: Today, as we celebrate his centenary birthday in the city of his residence Arlington, Virginia, I invite all members, family and friends to join me in wishing him the happiest of birthdays! May God continue to show him grace and favor in the years to come! We thank God for the wisdom he has shared!

NOW THEREFORE, I, Reverend Charles A. Hall, Pastor of the St. John Baptist Church of Alexandria in Alexandria, Virginia  do hereby proclaim on

this 20^th day of April 2024 that  SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 2024, is hereby proclaimed Deacon Emeritus Tom P. Heggs Day at St. John Baptist Church of Alexandria.
